It is essential to ensure there is adequate drainage by placing crocks or stones inside planters and by raising them using pot feet. Urns can get frozen to the ground with the result that excess water cannot escape unless drainage holes are kept free and clear.

Birdbaths should be drained over winter as should fountains if the pump is not kept running. Grills should be used to cover ponds and reservoirs where safety is an issue. Pump housings are supplied with reservoirs and can also be bought separately.

Small quantities of chlorine or similar can be used to keep water fresh if fish or other desired aquatic life are not present.
